“The key elements in the art of working together are how to deal with change, how to deal with conflict, and how to reach our potential ... the needs of the team are best met when we meet the needs of individual persons.” - Max DePree
How do you get your team off on the right foot?
So, you've got a great new team--full of talent--but they're not quite as motivated as they were when you hired them. Maybe some team members clash or flat out ignore each other. Maybe others seem unsure about their responsibilities, even though you've outlined everything. There are a lot of things like this that can go wrong when building a new team. Several factors need consideration: accountability, personality, values, and motivation.
It's a tough and time consuming task to work through issues within a team's culture. It's even harder to ensure that they will fully participate and invest in making it work. A few fast track tools and a fresh perspective can get your team off on the right track and keep them there. Your team just needs to be willing to see it through.
What do you do when your team loses sight of their mission?
A nasty bug that likes to infect teams comprised of even the most level-headed, energetic, and innovative minds is called PBA, AKA paralysis by analysis. PBA typically starts with one harmless tangent that leads your entire team deep into details and far from their original idea or goal. They start working in circles--and often try to reinvent the wheel. The problem is, their wheel isn't going anywhere.
Getting a seasoned team back on track can be slightly more challenging, as they are used to doing things in certain ways. It may be necessary to get them to adopt new systems or mindsets. By restructuring some critical areas of the team's systems and culture, a "stuck" team can become more motivated and productive than ever. Your team just needs to be willing to make some changes.
What specifically needs looking at?
If your team can never seem to get "on the same page" you may need a fresh perspective on their:
Introducing Team Dynamics Coaching / Consulting
for everyone. If it doesn't, it may be time to consider replacing team members that aren't willing to cooperate.
Each coaching call will focus on reviewing different aspects of your team's culture. Usually we get anything that you have on your mind out of the way first— a great way for you to vent about a problem or share a victory. Then we will work on your goals and see what you were able to accomplish and what your next steps should be. Finally we will use the rest of our time to do a little brainstorming and ask for feedback to keep everyone motivated.
You may choose to switch gears at any time and get consulting. Often the sessions do become a mix of coaching and consulting. Some teams actually opt for total consulting, but if you plan to focus almost entirely on consulting, I recommend that you consider a Virtual Dynamos certification program instead.
The program accepts up to five team members per team. And, we'll meet via telephone at a pre-determined “time slot”.
