Personality

You must match yourself with someone who is truly going to:

  • listen to—and respect--your wants and needs

  • share all her wisdom, knowledge, and personal experience

  • work with your unique set of skills instead of forcing you into new ones

  • tap into your true nature and connect with you personally

  • make you feel comfortable and put your mind at ease

  • encourage, motivate and support you

  • alleviate stress—not add to it

  • be your biggest fan!

Flexibility

Make sure your coach doesn’t have their own agenda.  Some coaches think there is only one right way to do something, and unless you follow their methods you will fail.  Hopefully if you hear something to that affect, a big red flag will appear in your mind.   Remember: they are there to help you succeed … period.  Your coach should always try to point you in the best possible direction, but it is your business and that means that they have to accept both your desires and decisions.  You are paying for their time.  Make it a positive experience or dump it!

Credentials

Background and skills are very important when selecting a coach.  A coach who has “walked the walk” is essential.  A background with strong hands-on corporate experience as well as the knowledge gained by growing a successful individual practice will be able to provide you with a wealth of information.  By asking a few key business and internet-related questions, you will get a feel not only for your coach’s ability to perform, but ability to explain these things to you.

Business Practices

Make sure that you're comfortable with your coach’s business practices.  Do they have a confidentiality clause?  Do they offer tremendous value?  Are they available when you need them?

Instincts

Coaching is instinctive.  The best coaches are born with the power to extract the best from others and propel them toward success.  That free initial call or meeting—where you get to know your coach—is very important.  When your appointment is over, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Was her personality warm and inviting?

  2. Was the pace of the call productive?

  3. Did she put you at ease?

  4. Did you feel like she really cared about you and your business?

  5. Did you feel like she asked you all the right questions?

  6. Did you feel that you had an opportunity to get all your coaching questions answered, or simply speak when you wanted to?

  7. Did she seem truly knowledgeable in her field?

  8. Did she seem truly passionate about her industry?

  9. Did she give you a free tip or some words of encouragement?

  10. Did you feel motivated after the initial call?

  11. Can you picture yourself confiding in her with confidence?

  12. Can you picture yourself sharing and celebrating a victory with her?

  13. Did you feel like you would make a good team?

If you answered YES to many of the questions above, you've got a great coach to work with!  Go for it!
