Why "Virtual Dynamos" ... ?

I sometimes get asked where the term Virtual Dynamos came from.

I never liked the term "Virtual Assistant."  It's the Assistant part I get stuck on because most VA's I know go way beyond the Assistant role.  For these VA's, I feel that actually they do themselves injustice when using the term.  They deserve something more powerful, for sure!

Anyway, here's the story of how the brand was born:

It was 2004 ... at the time when Spiderman was hitting the theatres.  Spidey was everywhere the media could pin him.  On the web.  On TV.  In magazines ... you couldn't get away from him if you tried.

He was staring at me from my computer screen one day as I flipped through IMVironments in Yahoo! messenger, so I definitely had "superhero on my brain".  I was in a discussion with a former colleague about branding.  The plan at that point was for my colleague and I to team up ... and take the industry by storm!

Our roles were starting to sound a lot like superheroes. I've always loved science fiction--and am especially fond of superhero fiction.  So, I started joking about how we'd be like the Dynamic Duo of the VA industry!  We laughed at first, but it only took me a few minutes to covert Dynamic Duo into Virtual Dynamos.

Hmm.  Catchy, I thought.  But, will everyone like it?

So, I tested it out.  Everybody like it!  They found it empowering, professional, and well ... cool.  Exactly what I was shooting for.  So, in 2004 the Virtual Dynamos brand was born.

The Dynamic Duo part didn't last long.  Soon after the brand became reality my former colleague set off to fulfill her own destiny independently, like most superheroes do.  The Duo has long since broken up but the Virtual Dynamos brand is stronger than ever.  Still empowering, professional, and cool (at least to me) but also recognized as a dynamic, driving force for virtual teamwork.

I'd like to thank everyone for supporting the brand over the years and pledge to continually push it to live up to it's name.  And, I still feel that more Virtual Assistants should drop the "Assistant" part.

Do you have a Virtual Dynamo inside you too?  ;)
